At NYC Resistor.

I have to say, of all the hackerspaces I've been to so far, this is by far the one I like the most. They nailed it. It's minimal and focused, there is not much more space than you see - however, there's loads of great stuff lying around, for example RepRap robots and its parts. They give classes on awesome things! There's not a lot of sofas but instead tables that look like working. This is not a place to hang out, shit gets done here.

I remember hearing this song on music for robots years ago. Back then the singer was solo and 17, probably 19 now.

Need to check out his new band, Hysterics, that also plays this version of "Mostly Untitled". Hats off, really really great.

Bling Bling Bling

Been around town with Nick and Steffi, figuring out the show with G.R.L. Vienna and INOPERAbLE for next week. Been kind of sceptical up until now because everything has been rather confusing and hectic, but sitting around with the people that are involved in it and seeing how enthusiastic they are clicked for me. It's going to be fun :)

More people that I didn't expect to be anywhere near here seem to be popping up, looking forward to seeing all of them again.

Also, I'd have never expected to be scared of food every day in the "western" world, or be kind of freaked out by nice people on the street. I'm so fucking Austrian, hehe.

Also, jetlag is a bitch. Given my rather ... warped ... sleeping ... pattern, I thought I'd be fine. Uuuuh, how wrong.

Familiar

I wouldn't have expected this city to feel as if I'd have already lived here, with the exception that I completely forgot how to get around town.

The constant honking, sirens, cellphone ring-tones of songs that I know, cars with music turned up loud, and some dude screaming "YO, NICE 'FRO!" in my direction, all of it makes me smile (which isn't even as much an exception as in Vienna).

On the other hand, I'm pretty surprised by some of how things work here. Even though my English is fluent, being out alone I find myself being confronted with thoughts like "wait, can you say that?" even with simple things like "I'll have the nachos with cheese please". I guess I'll just have to get used to it.

I need a bike. I really really do.

On my way to NYC JFK - at London Heathrow - adding up my waiting time etc., I end up having around 6 hours of sitting around doing nothing particularly interesting.

Also, I now have a new plan: get rich enough to have my own airplane. It's not that I don't like traveling, I just don't like the surroundings.

The fight-or-flight response, also called the fright, fight or flight response, hyperarousal or the acute stress response, was first described by Walter Cannon in 1915. His theory states that animals react to threats with a general discharge of the sympathetic nervous system, priming the animal for fighting or fleeing.

[...] Challenges to the ethos of multitasking have begun to emerge. Numerous studies have shown the sometimes-fatal danger of using cell phones and other electronic devices while driving, for example, and several states have now made that particular form of multitasking illegal. In the business world, where concerns about time-management are perennial, warnings about workplace distractions spawned by a multitasking culture are on the rise. In 2005, the BBC reported on a research study, funded by Hewlett-Packard and conducted by the Institute of Psychiatry at the University of London, that found, "Workers distracted by e-mail and phone calls suffer a fall in IQ more than twice that found in marijuana smokers." The psychologist who led the study called this new "infomania" a serious threat to workplace productivity. One of the Harvard Business Review's "Breakthrough Ideas” for 2007 was Linda Stone’s notion of "continuous partial attention," which might be understood as a subspecies of multitasking: using mobile computing power and the Internet, we are "constantly scanning for opportunities and staying on top of contacts, events, and activities in an effort to miss nothing.
